CA4HSR Hails State Legislature’s Vote to Begin High-Speed Rail Network

San Francisco, CA, July 5, 2012 - Daniel Krause, executive director, Californians For High Speed Rail (CA4HSR), a grassroots, statewide coalition of HSR supporters, issued the following statement:

“Today, the California State Legislature’s vote to release Prop 1A funds to begin work on true high-speed rail was important for two key reasons:

“First, the passage of today’s legislation endorsed the will of California voters, who in 2008 identified high-speed rail as a statewide priority. Back then, individuals from around the state supported a high-speed rail vision that would have a direct effect on relieving some of our state’s most challenging transportation and quality of life problems. That vision is about to become a reality.

“Second, today’s action not only represents a breakthrough in transportation policy, it will also help the economy and the state budget immediately due to the massive job creation outlined in the project. High-speed rail will also provide a foundation for ongoing economic prosperity because it provides a solution to our overtaxed transportation system.

“We thank the legislature for reaffirming the people’s priority. We also thank the diverse coalition of business, labor, environmental and livability advocates who remained focused on the goal at hand.

“Throughout the planning, development and political process, the rest of the country kept a watchful eye on our progress. In the coming months, that will continue as we begin to turn our vision into results. It’s time to get to work and show the country and world what we can do.”
